# Retries

Which errors to retry, how long to wait and how to retry a request safely.

Retry only when the problem body's `retryable` is true, and wait longer after each try.

## How to retry

1. Read `retryable`. If it is false, the same call fails again until you change something.
2. Wait before retrying: honour the rate-limit headers when present, else back off exponentially with jitter, starting near one second.
3. Stop after a few tries and report the `request_id`.

## Safe to repeat

`GET` requests are safe to repeat. A non-idempotent request that accepts an `Idempotency-Key` header replays its first result when retried with the same key; a different body with the same key is refused with `idempotency_key_reused`. The definition shows which operations accept the header.

## Kelly Wire

Close codes in the 4100 range mean back off and reconnect; codes in the 4000 range mean don't reconnect unchanged. The full ranges are in the [protocol](/reference/wire#protocol).
